Kids’ treatment/Early treatment
Orthodontics at Children’s Dental Clinic Regina provides a unique approach to patient care. Because our orthodontist practices with pediatric dentists, communication between specialties is improved as long term treatment plans can be made on the spot and in collaboration between the orthodontist and the pediatric dentists, all with the intention of providing more efficient and thus better patient care.

We perform all early treatment with removable and fixed appliances including space maintenance, space regaining, early cross bite correction, growth modification with custom fabricated functional appliances and habit breaking appliances. An important aspect of our treatment is that we liaison with our pediatric dental colleagues to provide growth modification treatment.

If problems with jaw growth are diagnosed and treated early, they can help save the patient from having more involved treatments when they are older including braces with tooth extraction or braces with jaw surgery. We also guide the eruption of permanent teeth as needed.

Adult treatment
Our orthodontist sees patients of all ages because it’s never too late to have the smile you always wanted. We offer both braces and Invisalign treatment to our adult patients with the option of aesthetic, Clarity Smart Clip brackets.

Types of braces
We use passive self-ligating braces called Smart Clip and we offer an aesthetic clear bracket solution with the Clarity SL brackets. Smart Clip braces utilize a built-in clip mechanism which ensures that the archwire is securely ligated in the brace.

This built-in tying process minimizes the force of friction in the brace so that it can slide more easily. Not to worry, our braces still have traditional wings so that we can give our patients any colour in the rainbow.

Appliances
We utilize all forms of active and passive orthodontic appliances. In particular, we custom fabricate Bionator and Twin block appliances for jaw growth correction treatments as well as fixed and removable appliances for early correction of cross bites.

Retention
Patients with removable retainers can have a choice of clear or acrylic retainers. They are typically advised to wear their retainers full time for the first 6 months and to wear them to bed after that. How long should they wear them for? For Life, as there is no safe time to stop wearing retainers.

Children’s Dental Clinic Regina provides its patients with one set of retainers after their treatment is completed and our patients are scheduled for regular retention check visits. Patients with fixed retainers are also scheduled for regularcheck-up visits and are advised of the need for long term retention.

Surgery
Surgery is a treatment option for patients who are no longer growing and whose jaw relationship is the main cause for the malocclusion or the kind of bite they have. Surgery is done while the braces are on the patients teeth and it is done inside the mouth so there are no visible scars left.

Mouth Guards
Children’s Dental Clinic Regina makes custom mouth guards for FREE for all our orthodontic patients. These are advised after the treatment is completed and the teeth are in their final and stable positions.

1st Visits/Consultations
First consultation appointments at Children’s Dental Clinic Regina are easy going and non evasive appointments. They include an evaluation of jaw function, analysis of the patient profile and facial symmetry as well as an intra-oral check-up.

Oral hygiene
Oral hygiene is paramount while in orthodontic treatment. This is because orthodontic appliances may serve as “plaque traps”. Our Orthodontist and friendly staff provide continuous guidance and instruction on oral hygiene for our patients.

Malocclusions
Malocclutions are bad bites and can occur in all three planes of space. They may be due to a problem with jaw growth or with the way teeth are positioned.

Soreness
Orthodontic appliances typically require a few days to a few weeks of adjustment time for patients.

Tissue irritation
The process of tooth movement involves a mild inflammatory reaction and as such may cause a feeling of mild pressure in the mouth for patients.

To treat this irritation the most that is required is over the counter medication. Braces may have hooks which can irritate the gums shortly after the placement of braces. Orthodontic wax is provided to our patients for this purpose and a little dab on the tip of the finger would suffice.

Trauma
The most common traumatic event with orthodontic appliances are wires which have been displaced and are poking patients. Children’s Dental World has emergency doctors on call for any potential problems.

Appliances
Removable appliances may become loose over time. The most common reason for this is over activation and tissues which did not have time to adjust to the new positioning of the appliance.

If you or your child’s appliance becomes loose, please book an appointment in order for the orthodontist to properly adjust it.

Broken brackets
Broken brackets are not an emergency as brackets are glued to the outside of the tooth and may come off. Please give us a call before your next orthodontic appointment so we can facilitate the placement of the new bracket.
